Best Subscription Box UK

Which is the Best Craft Beer Subscription Box?

Adam Beer, Reviews 0 Comments

The craft beer scene has exploded recently with a lot of excellent beer available from smaller and larger breweries alike.

Companies have popped up offering subscription boxes for those of us who require a regular delivery of craft beers.

So which is the best and importantly, offers the best value?

Boxes vary in style  and price, so here I’ve broken them all down to the important bits and mark them on several key factors:

  • Cost per bottle
  • Level of customisation and choice
  • How available the beers are (E.g. Can you just go to a supermarket instead?)

If you have any questions, please do leave a comment and I’ll answer asap!

All prices are based on 1 month subscription for equal comparison. Some links below are referrals and will generate discounts / small commission

Honest Brew

RATING
9 / 10

What sets Honest Brew apart is just how customisable it is.

You can set any time slot, be it monthly, 6 weeks, 13 weeks or whatever you need.

HonestBrew work with a huge range of breweries and work in partnership to produce exclusive beers (including this Lemon Sorbet ale which sounds delicious).

It is slightly more expensive per month than others due to the fact you get 12 beers. If you’re looking to spend less, just order less frequently and (try to) show some self restraint.

You can rate beers on boxes you receive, and this will tweak your future boxes, with each (hopefully) being better than the last.

HonestBrew is great value, with plenty of choice, exclusive beers and a nice personal touch where you can request a certain style in the box. The customisation for preferences is really well thought out and not intimidating to new users.

Even better, they offer mixed cases you can buy without subscribing to give them a go.

Frequency

You can choose any frequency you wish, with the default being monthly.

Range

The range is excellent, with most not found in supermarkets at all. For an idea of range, check out their pre-made mixed cases.

Choice

The boxes can be customised quite heavily based on taste preference, however there are 3 standard choices:

  • £30 Club Box
  • £36 Tailor Made
  • £40 Treasure Chest
  • Fully Customisable
  • Set any frequency
  • Business options available
  • Mixed Boxes Available

Flavourly

RATING
9 / 10

Flavourly is one of the most popular beer boxes currently out there, and it’s easy to see why.

Choose from light, mixed and dark styles of beer and have them delivered monthly along with a magazine.

The selection is good, with both big name craft brewers (Siren, Beavertown, Hiver) appearing alongside smaller, unknown breweries.

As is becoming fashionable, there’s even a craft Gin Club!

The biggest benefit of Flavourly is that you can customise your box quite accurately, and there’s even a taste profiler for if you’re unsure (or buying as a gift).

Excellent price, choice and value make this a winner!

Frequency

There’s only one option – once per month.

You can pause or cancel at any time.

Range

Most of the beers are sourced from both large and small craft breweries with a good variety each time of new and recognised names.

Craft Metropolis

RATING
9 / 10

A new comer to the Craft beer subscription box scene, Craft Metropolis has two unique offerings.

Firstly, their focus is to mostly on breweries based in London, and celebrate the diversity and sheer range of breweries located in the city.

Secondly, they allow you to pick your own beers! Rather than being ascribed a set of beer each month, you can opt in to have more choice over what you receive.

One off boxes are available too.

An extremely competitive price point considering how small their operation is makes it one of the top boxes out there, competing with the bigger brands.

The amount of breweries all producing excellent craft beer in London itself is huge, so focusing on presenting this market as best as possible really makes sense and helps reduce the analysis paralysis that other boxes offer. The range is still plentiful without being overwhelming.

While they do offer some from breweries outside of London too, it’s a really fantastic range considering it’s just all from 1 city.

Beer52

RATING
8 / 10

Beer52 is one of the more well known names in subscription box space and have been going for several years now.

Their focus is on small batch, with a lot of international brews from lesser known breweries.

What’s fantastic is that the range is usually a lot broader and quite global, each month having a set theme they adhere to.

Included in the box is also a set of snacks and a magazine (Available separately for £5 a month). One of my favourite things about this box is the quality of the magazine – a full colour 80 page booklet that has in depth stories from a mix of breweries. The production quality is really high and is a fab read if you’re keen to keep up to date with the industry.

Each month they review that month’s beers on YouTube, giving a good idea of what you’re getting into before you sign up.

The selection of beers was good, with both porters, IPAs and a real variety. The box packaging was also a really nice touch – compact and innovative, with it all slotting in with easy open tabs.

Their online account system lets you build up points, and if you’re really into your beer (and spending a lot of money with them) then you gain access to small, limited edition brews.

A bit more choice of what to receive, and a reduction in cost would make this a firm favourite. It’s very nearly there.

Frequency

£24 a month for 8 Beers
£29 a month for 10 Beers

If you pre-buy up to 12 months at a time the cost can be brought down to £21 a month.

Range

Some bottles can be found in supermarkets, however only those from bigger breweries.

Beer52 works a lot with micro-breweries to create limited editions meaning you get access to some very special and exclusive deals.

The magazine gives a great insight into the industry too, helping you discover more craft breweries and the stories behind them.

Eebria

RATING
8 / 10

Eebria have a huge range of beers available to buy online, as well as wine, cider and gin. All of the beers come from craft and smaller breweries, with a nice amount of information on each beer listed.

They have two options for subscription boxes, though there could be some improvement in layout of what each concludes as it’s not immediately clear what you’re signing up for.

I really like the focus on breweries rather than beers on the site – it somehow feels more personal and intimate, with a booklet of notes and information on what you’re about to dive into supplied with each box.

However, the lack of customisation on style does leave you a little open to getting items that you don’t like. The range looks good but there’s not many recent examples of boxes to judge from.

While the case price is £28 the £6 delivery makes this not quite the cheapest out there.

Frequency

You can choose between Monthly, Bimonthly and quarterly.

As usual, buying more boxes at once brings prices down.

Range

Most interestingly they have a commitment to never include anything you can find in a supermarket – increasingly a tough challenge but a very good sign that you’re getting your moneysworth.

Choice

Brewery Club
Each month you get a box dedicated from a single brewery – 12 beers, tasting notes, with a mix of special releases and the standard beers that they’re known for.
Discovery Club
The more familiar format – 12 beers from a mix of breweries, chosen based on new releases and the most exciting they have to hand. A range of styles is guaranteed, meaning you shouldn’t receive too much of 1 style.

Belgi Beer

RATING
7 / 10

So far all of the cases have focused on crafty, hoppy beers.

Belgi Beers offers an alternative, delivering only the best Belgian Beers they have to offer.

Each month is different, and I imagine there are a lot of craft breweries in Belgium to get through.

Due to location, cost is slightly higher than other boxes but extremely competitive considering it is coming from abroad. £3.25 is a very reasonable price for crafty Belgian beers, with a nice write up and focus on a new brewery each month.

Frequency

You can order month by month, or sign up for a year and receive 2 months free.

Range

The range is fantastic judging b their boxes. They work closely with small breweries and is assured to change, with no two same beers ever being sent out.

You can view the current case here being shipped here.

If you love Belgium beers, this looks like a cracking deal.

Imperial Beer Club

RATING
6 / 10

So far all of the boxes have given a good mix to the traditional craft beer image.

Imperial craft beer saw this, and decided none of them had enough alcohol.

Imperial beers are big, heavy and rich. Most of their beers weigh in above 7%, reaching a dizzying 13%. The range is fantastic, with big and small names from Darkstar and Siren, to the new and adventurous.

At £42 a month, it’s not cheap, but this is reflected with Imperial beers erring on the expensive side anyway.

To give it a higher rating I would like to see smaller boxes that make it a bit more affordable – the high price is just a bit off putting to everyone but the hardcore fans.

Frequency

Boxes come once a month without much deviation from that. I’d like to see more variety here, mostly because Imperial beers can take a bit longer to get through than the more accessible craft beers.

Range

The range is excellent with some really interesting sounding beers such as “Treacle Toffee Stout” and “Cherry Blackout”. Certainly not the usual hop-filled IPAs!

A few can be found in supermarkets, mostly those from Darkstar or Siren.

Choice

The clue is in the name – these guys only deal with Imperial beers and as such you’re lookng at a lot of Stouts and Porters. You get what you sign up for.

Beer Bods

RATING
6 / 10

Beer Bods has a slightly different concept to all of the other boxes.

Every 12 weeks, you receive a case of 12 beers. Each week, you drink this beer on a Thursday at 9pm and join an online tasting session, as well as receiving other information about the beer and story behind it.

While this is perhaps a little too infrequent, the amount of effort that has been put into making each week an experience and story telling session gives.

The idea is fantastic with good selection and quite reasonably priced. I would have liked to see a more regular option, perhaps with some customisation too.

Frequency

The only choice is a box every 12 weeks.

Range

Range is based on what journey the Beer Bods want you to go on! I would expert a decent selection of light and darker beers, based on their boxes.

You can view each week’s beer on their site here.

Beer Hawk

RATING
5 / 10

Beer Hawk is more of a traditional online retailer stocking a huge range of craft beers than just a subscription box.

However, their Beer Club lets you subscribe to 9 beers each month for £29.

This is quite a bit more expensive than others, and details on the beers you get for this are rather absent.

They work with a wide range of breweries globally, and looking at their mixed cases this is everything from smaller start up breweries to the regular supermarket names.

Sadly the lack of options, lack of information on what’s contained and high price lets Beer Hawk down.

Instead, check out their mixed cases which offer far better value and a bit more reassurance on what you’re getting.

Frequency

The only choice is a monthly delivery.

Range

What’s in the box isn’t very clear, but we would guess a good range of craft beers with maybe some supermarket available beers thrown in.

Brewdog

RATING
5 / 10

Brewdog really need no introduction. The first craft beer unicorn (passing £1bn in valuation), they have taps and bottles in pubs all over the UK, globally, and even own some of them. Their most famous beer is the Punk IPA which shot them to fame.

Recently they announced the launch of a subscription service to get a mix of your favourite brewdog beers each month.

Compared to others on this list, it does seem rather superfluous considering how many of their beers are stocked by larger retailers and pubs alike.

For £28 a month you get 8 beers, all of which are brewed by Brewdog. Each month the beers will vary, though only to what they have produced.

This is a shame, as they could have had 1 or 2 slots in each box where they highlight their favourite inspirational beers from the industry, or breweries they have worked with.

No doubt this will be a hit with Brewdog fans, but there are better value and far more interesting boxes available elsewhere.

Frequency

The major benefit is the flexibility of the box – you can pause, cancel or order one-offs at any time.

It reads as if you can set custom delivery periods, though this is not explicitly said.

Range

By limiting it to only their beers, each month is slightly predictable. However, they do produce a wide range of beers and the rotation may be enough to keep it fresh, though it can never compete with a selection from other breweries.

Choice

Sadly you can only choose the quantity rather than the style of Beers.

Best of British Beer

RATING
4 / 10

No guesses for what’s in this box!

Each month you receive 6 x 500ml bottles of beer from British breweries, with tasting notes and a pub quiz included for good measure.

The selection is limited and this runs along side their online store which has better gift cases to chose from.

There’s some amazing Breweries in the UK and it’s a shame that this box is a little lacklustre – especially at the price.

Frequency

The only choice is a monthly delivery.
